Guy Fawks, the Gunpowder Plot

Remember, Remember the fifth of November
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I see no reason the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up King and Parliament
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By Gods providence he was catched
With a dark lantern and burning match.

Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring
Holla boys' Holla boys, God save the King!
and what should we do with him? burn him!

Guy Fawkes along with a group of Catholic conspirators plotted to blow up parliament with barrels of gunpowder in order to overthrow King James I and the protestant community, in attempt to restore Catholicism. some believe that the whole whole sequence was a set-up which served to inflame anti-catholic sentiments.

An anonymous tip was left telling some members of parliament warning them to stay away. The King found out about the tip and ordered the search for the explosive. Guy Fawkes was found with matches, pocket watch and touch wood. Guy Fawkes was arrested and tortured.

The celebrations held on November the 5th mark the failure of the plot in 1605. Festive celebrations center around fireworks, which represent the barrels of gunpowder, and the burning of bonfires, often with an effigy of Guy Fawkes.
