Your timeline approach is much more 'plastic' approach (i.e. - making more of the cg world and its potential for turning information into dynamic visual experiences) and enlivens your project. I do think, however, that you'll need to model some other objects for the timeline to pass before arriving at the lantern - to make the convention of your timeline very clear to the audience. Also - I think you should create a post 'for Alan's attention' - get him to look specifically at your use of camera etc. so you can benefit from his specific advice. I think you should post a summary of your project so far, your intention, and your visual strategy - create a bullet point summary for Alan's attention - because, technically, he should be involved at the soonest possible opportunity.
More generally - I'd admire your tenacity and re-jig - it'll be worth it, Leanne. :-)
